Yes I did watch it, despite making fun of it and it was nice I suppose - at least at the beginning. It wore a bit thin after they'd done the vows, like the hair on William's head. I think the reception would have been more fun to tell you the truth. It would have been quite fun to see the whole Royal Family doing the can can and maybe seeing Prince Philip doing some good old racist jokes to get the party swinging.
Anyway on a serious note, despite the fact that they are quite fun, I wonder what the relevancy of them are in this day and age.
I like the fact that Britain has such a rich history - not all of it we can be proud of, but some bits we can and at least it does give us some kind of gravitas on the globe. However, I don't think our past needs to be our future and we have to admit it is becoming a joke. How long can we keep one family living in luxury, putting them on pedestals and sticking the boot in when they inevitably show themselves to be mere mortals like the rest of us.
Things are drastically different now then when the Queen was put on the throne nearly sixty years ago. Things have moved on but they haven't and to be honest they can't really. The idea of a modern monarchy is an oxymoron. That is why I suggest putting a time limit on them. Why not say that after William, that is it - no more monarchy, or perhaps after his son or daughter have had their time. That should be sufficient time for everyone to get used to the idea. The Royal Family fly in the face of the values we like to hold dear of equality, fairness and democracy. I'm not saying we need to cut off their heads, but we do need to come up with a constructive plan for the future which ultimately belongs to us and our children, not our ancestors.
